Freestyle Dance Class Guide: Learn to Move Without Limits

Freestyle helps you get out of your head and back into your body. It gives you space to play because you don’t have to chase perfection. So whether you want to learn improvisation seriously or just want to express yourself and become more comfortable taking up space, it’s a good idea to sign up for a freestyle dance class.

What is freestyle dance?

Freestyling means moving in the moment. You listen to the music and let your body respond. You can pull from hip hop, house, popping, locking, contemporary, jazz, or any movement language you already know, but you do not need to know every style before you begin. If you’re a complete beginner joining a freestyle dance class for the first time, you can start with your natural rhythm and build from there!

A freestyle dance class helps you understand how to create movement instead of waiting for someone to hand you choreography. You learn how to hear the beat and, more importantly, trust your choices.

Can I go to a freestyle dance class if I have never gone to any dance class before?

Yes. You don’t have to worry about keeping up. Unlike in choreography classes, where you have to remember the next eight-count and face the right direction, freestyle gives you permission to start smaller. You can practice grooves, footwork, isolations, rhythm, and simple transitions without needing to look exactly like anyone else.

Does that mean that freestyle has no structure? No. A good freestyle dance class

gives you tools. Your instructor will guide you through prompts and call-and-response exercises, or short movement patterns that help you build your own dance vocabulary. From there, you start connecting movements in your own way and changing direction without losing the rhythm.

What if I’m really, really shy?

Then, going to a freestyle dance class can actually help you! Begin in your own space and keep your movement close to your body until you feel ready to expand. You can experiment without needing to “perform” right away.

Many people think confidence comes first, then dancing gets easier. In our classes here at All Styles Tribe, we often see the opposite. You move first, and confidence follows!

Each time you try a new groove and take a small risk, you prove something to yourself. You learn that people are not watching you the way you feared. They are also learning. They are also trying. They are also finding their own rhythm! So come dance with us at All Styles Tribe. Bring your nerves and your awkward first steps! We will help you find your rhythm. You can sign up for class right here.
